One of the world’s most preeminent data centre cooling experts
Robert’s wide and extended experience in the Mission Critical Facilities industry working on design, reliability, energy efficiency and commissioning together with his academic achievements have provided him with the theoretical and practical tools to develop innovative solutions. These include free cooling designs, commissioning strategies, air management metrics and data centre energy assessment tools. He is the author of over 60 papers on reliability and energy efficiency and refrigeration, has authored several patents on data centre free cooling designs, has written many white papers (in English and Spanish) and speaks regularly at Data Centre Dynamics conferences. He was awarded the prize for Outstanding Contribution to Industry at the inaugural DCD LATAM awards. He is a Visiting Professor at London South Bank University and has participated in many technical committees (ASHRAE, CIBSE, BREEAM, The Green Grid, and European Code of Conduct).
An industry expert with an extensive track record in delivering complex engineering systems on time and on budget
David has over 30 years’ experience in the design, installation and commissioning of large-scale engineering systems and prior to joining OI he spent the previous 15 years in a senior management role within a multidisciplinary, international consultancy. His specialism is high availability engineering systems and he has an extensive track record in delivering complex engineering systems on time and on budget. He has broad experience of operational risk analysis having undertaken many studies utilizing Failure Mode Effect and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Certification, IST management and Risk Based Maintenance. He has provided independent advice to clients on energy efficiency of data centres and has been used as an independent specialist on a number of significant failure events. As a project manager he has an extensive track record in delivering projects within a team environment and has the ability to present complex issues in a non-technical way. He is an Uptime Accredited Tier Designer (ATD) and recently completed the AP15 HV course in order to enhance his understanding of the processes and challenges faced by data centre operations teams.
Award Winning Young Mission Critical Engineer
Sophia is a Chartered Engineer who has worked as an engineering consultant on a variety of projects in several countries, delivering data centre design, commissioning, training and risk and energy assessments. She has worked alongside operations teams to help clients to manage their critical environments. Her experience includes developing low energy data centre cooling solutions, creating analytical and reporting tools, leading teams and business development. Sophia’s contributions to the digital infrastructure sector were recognised in 2020 when she received an Infrastructure Masons IM100 Award. She is an active participant of various industry groups on data centre sustainability and publishes and presents work in this area.
Dr. Beth Whitehead
ASSOCIATE SUSTAINABILITY ENGINEER
PhD in Data Centre Sustainability
Beth is involved in researching the environmental impact of data centres and as part of an international cross-industry team has just been awarded EU Interreg funding to address the growth in e-waste arising from data centres. The project, called CEDaCI (Circular Economy for the Data Centre Industry), aims to reduce waste, conserve resources and build a secure supply chain for Critical Raw Materials in NWE by designing CE-fit products, developing business strategies for equipment reuse, improving materials recycling and reclamation technologies, and changing user behaviour. Her previous research includes the impact of water vs air in the operation of data centre cooling technologies; and the application of a life cycle approach to data centre sustainability.
Further to her research activities, she has been involved in the development of the EU Green Public Procurement (GPP) Criteria for Data Centres; BSI 50600-99-2: Information technology - Data centre facilities and infrastructures - Part 99-2- Recommended practices for environmental sustainability; TR 50600-9-4: Information technology - Data centre facilities and infrastructures - Maturity Model; and completed a PhD focused on the life cycle environmental impact of data centres.
Beth has also been involved in energy and risk reduction workshops and assessments with OI. She has a multidisciplinary knowledge of buildings (from her PhD and previous role as a structural engineer) and has worked with operations teams to understand their use of energy in the data centre.
Marco has been working in the HVACR industry for nearly 30 years, with experience in sectors ranging from retail, lodging, hospitals, life sciences, district cooling, and critical facilities.
With a background in refrigeration Marco specialises in chilled water hydraulic systems and is active in areas from client training, hydraulic system design, controls system design, and fault finding, Marco was a credited contributor to the latest edition of Faber & Kell's Heating and Air-Conditioning of Buildings hardback reference book. He is currently a committee member for the HVAC Systems Group recently set up by CIBSE.
Paul is a Chartered Engineer with a specialist skill base within information and communications technology (ICT). From majoring in Communications and Electrical Engineering, Paul’s experience within the construction industry in mechanical and electrical building services (MEP) / critical systems engineering has encompassed a wide variety of industry sectors.
Paul has worked on projects across the UK and Ireland, USA, Middle East and Australia. Paul also plays an active role in the data centre industry.
Paul is a member of BCS and has previously been a member of a British Standards committee, responsible for developing data centre standards.
Colin has been involved in engineering and construction for over 35 years and has extensive experience in project management and client’s representative roles. His knowledge of both M&E disciplines brings a practical approach to tackle on-site challenges.
Colin has worked around world and provided specialist procurement and risk mitigation consulting to a range of clients in a property development environment. This includes developing technical specifications and acceptance testing criteria along with factory acceptance testing and validation, ensuring that client expectations are clearly defined and communications between stakeholders are properly aligned.
Colin was part of the commissioning management team on a number of data centres and also managed the commissioning on critical infrastructure facility that provided power to TV studios
He is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and a chartered member of the Institute of Transport and Logistics.
ACTIVE LEARNING SPECIALIST
Rosemary’s background is in education and training in the further education sector
She has extensive experience of designing and delivering training programmes for teachers, trainers and managers. Her approaches focus firmly on active learning, and the application of skills, knowledge and theory to real work contexts.
She has worked closely with organisations to tailor training programmes to their particular needs. She has been involved in major government development projects, most notably the Teaching and Learning Programme where she contributed to the development of on-line training materials made nationally available to education and training providers.
She has written or co-authored a range of publications and training manuals including ‘Little acorns taking root: systematic approaches to good practice transfer within organisations’, ‘Quality Health Check for Whole Organisation Approach to Skills for Life’
Cova Pardo Sanchez
ELECTRICAL ENERGY RESEARCHER
Cova has experience in engineering and education and focuses on developing course material. Cova’s background is in Physics and she is currently working on an PhD in Electrical Engineering, focused in characterisation of thin film Silicon photovoltaic cells.
