This is a site-specific course, tailored (in length and content) to the facility and needs of the client. The aim of the course is to increase participant awareness of facility cooling systems and opportunities for optimisation and includes energy efficiency best practice. The workshops are collaborative, focusing on the application of theory to the client’s data centre(s).
Course Objectives
An example 3-day course includes the following learning objectives:
Day 1 – The fundamentals of cooling including the principles of:
• Psychrometrics
• Basic thermodynamics
• Refrigeration cycles
• Cooling and free cooling
• Fluid dynamics
• Fan laws
• Humidification
• Heat transfer
Day 2 – Specific cooling design and air management:
• Control strategies
• Bypass, recirculation and air flow availability
• Temperature impact on bypass and recirculation
• Potential problems and solutions including target improvements
• EU Code of Conduct
• Containment systems and air segregation efficiency
• Risk mitigation and energy enabler
• Air management tool and recommendations
Day 3 – Opportunities for energy reduction:
• Cooling system overview
• Energy efficiency and PUE
• Effects on air flow/pressure between hot/cold aisles
• Methods to reduce energy consumption
• Creation of specific, prioritised recommendations using psychrometrics/air management/free cooling
• Learning check
